Half Moon Bay Sun Rise

Woke up to a picture-perfect, wind-free morning—ideal for cruising further down the coast. The sunrise painted the sky in fiery hues through the clouds, making for an epic start to the day. After brewing some coffee and letting Finn the wandering dog take a quick pit stop, it was time to hit the road toward the next adventure: Hearst Castle!

Hearst Castle is a breathtaking historic estate perched in the hills of San Simeon, California. Built by publishing tycoon William Randolph Hearst in the early 20th century, this opulent mansion is a stunning mix of Spanish Revival, Mediterranean, and Gothic architecture. Designed by architect Julia Morgan, it boasts 165 rooms, lavish gardens, grand pools, and a world-class art collection. While Hearst Castle does allow photos for personal use, sadly, I can’t share them here—so you’ll just have to imagine the grandeur! But trust me, between the stunning architecture, lavish grounds, rare art pieces, and jaw-dropping views, this place is worth a visit. You'll just have to see it for yourself!

Why Visit Hearst Castle?

  1. Jaw-Dropping Architecture & Design – The castle is a masterpiece, featuring intricate ceilings, marble floors, and antique furnishings imported from Europe.

  2. The Iconic Neptune Pool & Roman Pool – Two of the most beautiful pools you’ll ever see, adorned with mosaics, statues, and breathtaking views.

  3. Rich History & Hollywood Glamour – In its heyday, Hearst Castle hosted legendary guests like Charlie Chaplin, Clark Gable, and Winston Churchill.

  4. Incredible Coastal Views – Sitting on a hilltop, the castle overlooks the Pacific Ocean and offers spectacular panoramic vistas.

  5. Rare Art & Antiques – The estate is home to an unparalleled collection of sculptures, paintings, tapestries, and ancient artifacts from around the world.

  6. Wildlife Encounters – Hearst once had a private zoo, and today, you might still spot zebras roaming near the property! On the bus ride back down the hill.... I actually saw a zebra grazing in the field with the cows!

The Hearst Castle is absolutely worth visiting! Whether you're a history buff, architecture lover, or just someone who enjoys stunning views and unique experiences, Hearst Castle is a must-see. Plus, guided tours make it easy to explore the different rooms and gardens while learning about the extravagant life of William Randolph Hearst.

After soaking in the grandeur of Hearst Castle, it was time to hit the road again and cruise toward our final stop of the day—Morro Bay Strand State Beach. The mission? Get there in time to catch the sunset right from our camp spot.

But of course, no road trip is complete without a few spontaneous

detours! First up, a stroll through Cambria’s charming Main Street, lined with cozy art galleries and quirky antique shops. A little further down the coast, Cayucos called our name, and I couldn’t resist popping into Remember When Antique Mall, where I scored a colorful wooden heart to hang at home—a perfect little souvenir.

Finally, we rolled into Morro Bay Strand State Beach, ready to soak in those ‘ocean views’ from spot #1… only to find a towering hedge blocking the scenery. Oops. Luckily, the camp host was a lifesaver, letting us switch to a better spot further in. And wow—watching the sunset right from the van was the perfect way to wrap up another epic day on the road!
